Gateway’s Revolutionary Plastics
Gateway SHUR-grip™ (S-Series) Plastic
Gateway Disc Sports’ SHUR-Grip™ (S-Series) matted version of their disc plastic is a high end version of the “DX” or “D” plastic of you may be familiar with. This type of polymer offers a firm, solid feeling, grippy surface; and great performance in the rain or extreme heat. The “S-Series” plastic allows the disc to break in slowly without changing the flight characteristics after just a few hits.
Generally, you can expect a Shur-grip disc to be slightly less overstable & possibly have a little more glide, as compared to the same disc in the Proline Evolution (E-Series) plastic. It will typically break in faster as well.
Gateway EVOLUTION PRO-LINE™ (E-Series) Plastic
Gateway’s EVOLUTION PRO-LINE™ (E-Series) polymer is their premium series . Gateway golf discs have evolved into the front runner in polymer technology with these new polymers. The Evolution™ series polymer (a TPU from BASF) has a surface durometer of 60 D-shore. It is virtually scratch, scuff, dent, crack, and chip-proof. The durability is as good as any plastic on the market. The smooth surface and low profiles make each model a little faster while still very comfortable in your hand.
Compared with the same disc in the Shur-grip plastic, an Evolution Proline disc should be slightly faster and more overstable. It should also keep it’s original flight characteristics longer.
Gateway SuperGlow™ Plastic Discs
GDS also make a limited number of their discs available in a killer SuperGlow™ glow-in-the-dark plastic. You'll be very pleased with how bright the Gateway SuperGlow™ discs fluoresce with only brief charging in sunlight or artificial bright light; and they keep their glow charge really well. SuperGlow™ discs include the Wizard, Warlock, Sabre, and select others in limited runs.
Gateway Putting & Approach Disc Golf Discs
Gateway Disc Sports’ legendary Wizard™ putt & approach disc is growing in popularity each year, owed to it’s incredible straight-flying stability and predictability. Gateway now also offers the Warlock™ putter, similar to the Wizard but without the the Wizard’s signature bead.

The Gateway Wizard
In-Depth
Article by: David McCormack
of Gateway Disc Sports

I will try to address some of the scientific or aerodynamic differences between the Wizard™ and Aviar™.
First of all I believe the Wizard is a bit longer in flight than Aviar and just about all putters. Most guys who can throw big with a putter will agree.
This is due mainly to the Wizard’s gyroscopic effect. Accomplished by it’s unique balance of air deflection; and the materials used on the surface of the discs. The more matted the finish on the discs, the less contact the air makes with the actual surface. We do this with the rubber in our materials. It causes less surface friction and reduced drag.
The Wizard’s balance of air under and over the leading edge is much closer to equal than that of the Aviar. And, that certainly adds to it’s increased glide on deceleration. The Wizard has better stability for a wider range of Speeds.
An Aviar P & A will flip pretty quick when thrown hard and a KC will fade left more than a Wizard at low speeds.
Keeping in layman’s terms, the wizard’s stability covers a much larger velocity range than either the Aviar P & A or the Aviar “big bead”.
As for the technical reasons why the Wizard is superior; most are based on the angles deflecting and passing air (wing vs. top / dome vs. bead).
Here are a few others:
- 1) The Wizard is smaller in mass; around 125cm³ (cubic centimeters) while the Aviar is around 140 or 145cm³. This equates to less overall space taken up by the object.
If both discs weigh 175g, the Wizard’s density would be 1.4, while the Aviar’s is only 1.2. Even with both discs weighing 175g, the plastics in our’s is heavier and distributed very differently. - 2) Besides the shape of the nose (which is quite different), the rim is still close in mass/size to the Aviar. The Wizard has a .068cm thick flight plate though; as opposed to the Aviar’s, which is over .075cm. At 1-½” in from the outer edge of the Wizard, the flight plate begins to thicken, and by the time it gets to the shoulder (where the inside rim meets the flight plate) it’s thickness is up to .125cm heading into the rim. Even soft Wizards feel beefy at first, but you can break them in by flexing them. Because we use such high-end rubbers the rebound resiliency (memory) is greater, as is the abrasion resistance. So, they come right back to shape, only a bit more flexible.
The surface, even on firm Wizards, is still very grippy and tacky for grabbing chains.
This added thickness (lacking in the Aviar), in the outer part of the rim, helps tremendously in two different ways:- 1st; It adds structure stability to the overall shape of the disc by providing added reinforcement due to the added thickness. Even a mature time-tested Wizard will retain near perfect roundness.
- 2nd; Increased gyroscopic properties of the disc. Simply put - a more gyroscopic disc will spin longer. The longer the spin, the longer a disc can hold a flight pattern. Bottom line - The Wizard is straighter (flies with a much tighter “S” pattern) and will hold just about any line you put it on for a longer period of time. Whether its 30 feet, or 300 feet / 20 mph, or 70 MPH!
- 3) The thickness of outer part of the flight plate thins down quickly at the 1-½” mark to about .063cm (compared to the .075cm of the Aviar). This allows for a much better feel between your thumb and fingers when pinching the flight plate for putting. This is because they are closer together. You can get better touch with a thinner flight plate.
Besides all the technical mumbo jumbo, the real reason we feel our putters are more successful is the wide range of grips and feels. It’s like buying a good micro brew compared to the same old light beer (no offense Dave D, but we spend hours dry blending formulas for 200-1200 disc batches and I'm sure your way past that stage for the putters). It takes up a lot of time and causes funky weights and blended colors. We may run a 60 disc batch, make it softer or firmer, and then blend & run a 300lb batch.
Every player seems to like a different aspect of a putter. You wind up using it at least once on every single hole, so you better really like it.
A lot of people are playing with, and liking the Wizard for all shots under 300 feet. We sell a lot of them and will soon be selling a lot more!

The Gateway Warlock™ (one of their newest additions) is the same disc as the Wizard, but without the signature bead. As a result, the Warlock is dead-straight stable out of the box, behaves like a broken-in Wizard, and has a later low-speed fade when thrown hard. The perfect putter to complement your Wizard.
Gateway's midrange discs are versatile and more predictable for players than comparable midranges from other manufacturers. GDS offers midrange discs that can suit a variety of shot types, and are available in a broad variety of plastics.

The Gateway Demon™ is an extremely overstable midrange driver molded exclusively in the Shur-grip (S-Series) plastic. One of the most overstable golf discs currently in production, the Demon will hold its line into any wind. It is a very fast flyer with an extremely hard finish to the left making it as predictable as any disc on the market. When thrown flat it will finish with a strong left fade, a hyzer line will give a sweeping arc path that will knife into the ground.
A solid disc for strong fade shots, skip shots, and sidearm hyzers. When you absolutely need to get up and down quickly, the Demon is the disc.
Gateway Disc Sport's fairway drivers include some of the straightest-flying, most predictable disc golf drivers every produced. The Sabre™ is legendary for handling power and snap with high-speed stability but less low-speed fade than comparable fairway drivers from other manufacturers. The Blaze offers serious fade for those 9-iron spikes and quick-fading hyzers.

Great for hard fade shots, fore-hand throws, knife hyzers, s-curves, and skip shots. The Blaze holds it’s line into headwind with a strong, predictable finish every time. This disc is also a good choice for sidearm and overhand throws.
The Gateway Disc Sport™ series of distance drivers are cutting edge. Gateway has spent hundreds of hours empirically researching the effects of plastic polymer composition, gyroscopic weight distribution, profile and other properties on the flight of maximum distance drivers. GDS research has culminated in some of the most advanced disc golf drivers available today.

The Blurr™ & RAGE™
Long Range Drivers
Article by: Gateway Disc Sports
The Blurr™ and Rage™ are two new discs made using a different top than their sisters; The Illusion™ and Spirit™, respectively. The new top has 12cm³ (cubic centimeters) less mass right on the rim, and angles down to the nose over a 1¼” span instead of just the last 5/16”, as the Illusion and Spirit do. The new top also comes down tighter to the parting line, which makes it sharper and faster.
The Blurr is still a little more gyroscopic than the Spirit, but it’s speed is noticeably faster because of the flat (non-concave) wing, which allows it to climb up early in the flight.
Those who have thrown a Spirit long enough to get one broken in know how great the disc is into head winds. Especially for those with a lot of velocity and rotation. If you like the feel of the Spirit but couldn’t get it to stay straight long enough, then the Rage should work better, as it requires less rotation to achieve a stable flight. It is still pretty beefy out of the box, but is easier to turn over out of the hand because of the reduced gyroscopic effect. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still probably more gyroscopic than any of competitor’s discs, but certainly less than the Spirit. Both discs weighing 175 grams, the 12cm³ of reduced thickness would equate to about 12 grams less right on the rim.
GO THROW ’EM!
One of GDS’ newest models, the Gateway Blurr™ is a very fast and slightly overstable distance driver with excellent glide and a gradual low-speed fade. The Blurr is a great disc for players who want the speed and distance of the Illusion but need something less overstable.
